Family & the farm
Established in 2020, Calico Pastoral is the ambitious dream of owner and operator Leo Tompkins. The business enterprise and farming operations were initially founded on Leo’s family farm located in the scenic and fertile Mary Valley in Southeast Queensland. Our enterprise’s namesake comes from the beautiful and bountiful Calico Creek that runs through our farm and proves one of the significant tributaries to the famous Mary River.
Our Animals
Calico adores the diversity found in nature and thus embodies this in the way we operate of farm and our business.
We also supply specialty and ecologically sustainable products to our consumers including grass fed & pasture raised beef & lamb, eggs & local honey.
Calico Pastoral is continually evolving in line with technology and ever-changing markets. We have many significant projects under way which we hope will advance and inspire change in the agricultural industry. Through innovative approaches and technologies Calico will serve to not only strengthen already established markets in Australia like that of beef, lamb, and eggs but also emerging ones like sheep dairying. Whilst remaining flexible and cognisant of changing market trends, Calico Pastoral continues to innovate using an upgrading program to ensure we always deliver superior products and services to our loyal clients.
Our animals are always bred following our strict criteria we dub the triple T’s - Type, Trait, and Temperament, from the best performing breeds in their class. With focus on low input, robustness, resilience, and profitability to meet the stringent requirements of the modern Aussie farmer.
our business
With a love for farming and an admiration for the beauty of our local region, Leo sought to establish a regenerative agricultural enterprise that was not only sustainable in farming practice, profitable and productive but successfully conserved and restored our earth. Working in tandem with nature, Calico Pastoral has been able to rebuild fragile and degraded ecosystems whilst remaining productive and profitable enabling us to remain viable and competitive in a volatile market.
We believe this is due to our ability to respect and maintain the fine balance between nature’s finite resources and agriculture’s often intensive needs. The conservation of our local region has yielded an environment that is more robust and thus has stabilised and secured our farm and our business. Calico Pastoral has been established with foresight for flexibility and encouragement of advancing technologies and practices. Our approach enables us to provide our clients and consumers with superior products and services ensuring everyone succeeds. This allows our business to not only support our family, but our community and above all our environment.
